DIY Hall Tree

I always wanted a hall tree but didn't want to spend the high prices for the one that I wanted. So I settled for a bench and shelf from Target. It was ok and I lived with it for a while.

Earlier this year it dawned on me to use what I have to get what I want. So I convinced Robbie to help me make the bench and shelf look like a built in hall tree.

Here is the before.

Hall Tree Before
I started with painting the bench and shelf white using KILZ Chalk Paint. We then measured from the distance from the top of the shelf to the top of the bench to cut a piece of bead board. The bead board was then nailed onto the wall using finishing nails. The shelf was hung directly on top of the bead board. To finish it out and make it look like it is built in we added a 1" piece of trim molding to the sides and at the point where the bench will slide directly under it. Since the width of the shelf was smaller than the bench, we added a quarter round trim molding to the sides to make them the same width. All of the trim and nail holes were then caulked and painted. To add durability, we used a clear furniture wax to seal the entire hall tree. The final touch was to spray paint the hooks with a flat black.
Isn't she lovely? My favorite part is that the bench is still removable so we can access the outlet behind it. Not to mention clean behind it.
